Wildcat Hills Sra Bioblitz!

Description

Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area will host the first “Wildcat Hills Bioblitz” this year on July 7 and July 8. A bioblitz is an engaging citizen science event designed to identify as many plants and animal species as possible within a designated area and timeframe. During this event members of the public will team up with local natural resources experts to explore and learn about the biodiversity of the habitat found at the Wildcat Hills. The bioblitz is hosted by Bird Conservancy of the Rockies and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, and funded by the Nebraska Environmental Trust. Scheduled activities and sessions will run from 1pm on Friday July 7 through 12pm on Saturday July 8. The sessions will include everything from bird surveys, wildflower surveys, and bat surveys to special topic sessions such as geology of the park and a bighorn sheep hike. See below for a full schedule of sessions. Activities will take place throughout the park; however the Wildcat Hills Nature Center will serve as a central location for the entire event. During the event, visitors will find a map and an updated tally count of all species in the basement classroom in the nature center. Members participating are also invited to the bioblitz pot luck dinner Friday night at 6pm on the deck of the nature center. Visitors are encouraged to bring a dish, and enjoy dinner with many area natural resource experts. “If you’re looking for a fun, free event to get you and your family outside this summer, this is a great opportunity! Kids and adults alike will love the chance to get out and explore while learning from experts about our amazing natural diversity. We’re excited to bring this event to the Wildcat Hills!” said Amber Schiltz, Nebraska Wildlife Education Coordinator. The event is free and open to people and families of all ages. Anyone interested can participate in all or part of the event. Please contact Amber Schiltz at amber.schiltz@birdconservancy.org or (402)310-6137 for more information. A park sticker is required to enter the park, and can be purchased in the nature center. Download the event flyer: Wildcat Hills Bioblitz 2017
