HOW Roanoke Valley VA Chapter Event
We are back on the beautiful, historic James River in Botetourt County! We will meet at the parking lot beside Twin River Outfitters and travel to the launch at Springwood. We will make a 3 1/2 mile paddle back to Buchanan where we will enjoy a nice BBQ lunch.
This is an easy section of the river to paddle and fish. Hopefully we will find some nice Smallies to tangle with along the way. This trip is FREE to any veteran from any branch of service, any first responder, and their families.
We will supply kayaks, fishing gear, PFDs, paddles, waters, and lunch after the fishing is over. Participants who wish to fish need to obtain a VA fishing license before fishing. Contact us with questions about licenses.
We currently have 4 kayaks available for any veteran or first reponder that would like to go.
Volunteers should arrive to the parking lot by 7:30am. Participants will need to arrive at 8:00am. If you would like to ride share from Roanoke to Buchanan please contact me directly so arrangements can be made.
Experience the peacefulness of being on the water, the thrill of fishing from kayaks, all while enjoying the camaraderie of hanging out with other vets.
Once you register we will send you an email reminding you of the event and any special details that you may need. Should you have a specific question, you can also email us any time at firstname.lastname@example.org
A valid Virginia Freshwater Fishing License is required of all participants over 16. Fishing licenses can be obtained at www.dgif.virginia.gov/licenses/
If you are unable to purchase a license please contact us before the event and we will make every effort to get you licensed.
Can a nonfishing person join in on the fun?
Yes. This event will end at the Buchanan Town Park. It has a playgound for young kids and picinic area. There should be some volunteers that remain on the beach, so there will be people around to socialize with or just set up a chair and enjoy the day. If kayaks are available, we welcome participants to paddle around with the group regardless of if they are fishing or not.
What can/can't I bring to the event?
We will be out in the elements. Weather can change quickly. We may cancel for high winds or heavy rain, but this should be rare. Because there is the possibility of getting wet, cotton clothing is discouraged, especially in cooler temperatures. Quick dry clothing will keep you the most comfortable in all conditions. Sun protection is very important on the water. Hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are highly recommended. Do not wear or bring anything that you do not want to get wet. Absolutely no alcohol.
We welcome families and think they are a very important part of the healing process, but we do not have the ability to supervise children. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult.
