2016 King of the Rogue

Description

THE KING OF THE ROGUE is the ultimate river event! The overall King and Queen are expected to wake early, catch a huge salmon, and then compete in four whitewater events:

  • 4-person Raft— 3 laps, 2 portages, Class IV

  • Kayak or IK—3 laps, 2 portages, Class IV

  • Standup Paddleboard (SUPs)—1 lap, Class II

  • NEW 1-person Rowing—Downriver Class IV

Proceeds from this event support the Gold Hill Whitewater Park.

FISHING DERBY!

Gold Hill Whitewater Center (river left) opens up private river access for this event. Fisherman launch from 1275 Upper River Rd (boats are allowed to launch the night before) and head upstream for over a mile of excellent Salmon fishing between Nugget and Powerhouse Rapids. Last year's winning boat caugth 3 salmon. For more information about the derby, call Ben Bansen of Rogue Rafting Co at 541-855-7080.

Awards go to the fishermen who catch the biggest and most fish and also earn points for the overall King or Queen title.

RAFT TEAM (R4) & KAYAK RACE:

Each raft team & kayaker will compete in a 3 lap race. Start times will be scheduled to allow for people to compete in more than one category. The first lap begins just above the foot bridge at the top of Powerhouse Rapids and follows buoys and slalom gates to "Grandma's Run," a Class III rapid ending with a sheer drop of about 7 feet.  Racers then paddle back up river in the slack water channel along the river-left bank and portage across an island. The second lap plunges down the main Class IV drop called Powerhouse to land on Mugger's Island and portage across. The final lap takes competitors down Mugger's Alley (hold on because this rapid has been known to steal everything out of your boat, including the paddlers) to the finish line just below Mugger's Island.

SUP (Standup Paddleboard) TECHNICAL CLASS II RACE:

SUP paddlers begin at the raft start and head upstream through a series of buoys and obstacles, finishing back at the race start. Designed to be fun for intermediate to advanced paddlers.

NEW - INDIVIDUAL ROWING RACE!

This downriver race is open to any form of 1 person rowing craft: raft, cataraft, driftboat or whatever. The start is the same as the multilap race, but first you head upstream, round a buoy and then head downstream through Powerhouse Rapid to the finish line below Mugger's Island.

RACE FEES:

You may enter more than one event. The first event is $40.00 ($15.00 event insurance fee + $10.00 event fee + $15.00 event t-shirt) with additional events at $5.00 each. Each participant receives a free raffle ticket. Registration is available online at active.com (there is a $3.95 processing fee in addition to event registration fees). Registration will also be available the day of the event. KING of the ROGUE T-Shirts will be available for $15.00 to participants and $20.00 to the general public. Quantities will be limited so be sure to buy yours early!

REQUIREMENTS / RULES:

PFD'S, HELMETS & APPROPRIATE FOOTWEAR for carrying your boat over rocks are required (no bare feet or flip flops).  You must of course sign a waiver. The minimum age is 15 with parental consent. THE SAFETY MEETING IS MANDATORY. This race is intended as friendly competition. Assisting other teams or paddlers in distress may earn sponsor prizes. Failure to assist in an emergency may result in disqualification.

Rules generally follow World Rafting Association Guidelines and are explained during the safety meeting. Keep in mind that the river flow, the weather, the rules, and the racecourse can change without notice. Judging may be arbitrary and downright blind.

PRIZES:

The KING of the ROGUE award is given to the individual with the most points from all five events; fishing derby, raft team, kayak, SUP, and rowing races. Points will be awarded based on placement in each of the events (it is not necessary to participate in all five events to win, but your chances increase if you do). Prizes are also awarded for the fastest raft team, kayak, SUP and rowing events.

NEWWe will have a QUEEN of the Rogue prize this year sponsored by REI! Ladies get your teams together!
